The Documentary Film: Kill Pen
Donation protected
The Documentary Film: Kill Pen is a groundbreaking expose of the political, economic, and criminal forces behind the horse slaughter pipeline in the United States, the same pipeline that allows horsemeat to end up in grocery store products labeled as beef.
The film is completed and in the final stages of post production.
So Why Fundraise Now?
Kill Pen made its film festival premiere at the Equus Film Festival in New York City last November 2015. The initial funds raised on GoFundMe helped us over the hurdle of some unavoidable semi-final costs which needed to be covered before the film could screen at Equus.
With additional opportunities on the horizon to screen via film festivals, www.tugg.com, and on demand streaming on the horizon, we have continued costs which still need to bring us to the final stretch.
Up until this point, Sila Productions has managed to complete Kill Pen in true indie fashion - begging, borrowing, and bartering along the way. Start up funds were obtained through a generous donation from one individual who truly believed in the film. Those initial funds covered essential costs only - mainly travel necessary to complete interviews and equipment rentals for shooting.
Most of the individuals who have worked on this film did so pro bono, or at deferred payment. The cinematographer has contributed countless hours of work to this film, donating his time and deferring fees. An amazing team of designers crafted the graphics for the film, also agreeing to deferred payment. And the director used personal funds to help along the way when needed.
But there are some things which can't be bartered or borrowed, and we need to cover those costs now.
How You Can Help
Supporters can do two things to help ensure that Kill Pen continues to screen at festivals and via TUGG in the coming year.
First, whatever you are able to donate will help to cover those final costs. We are grateful for any and all contributions, no matter how small.
Second, help get the word out that the film is almost ready to go and that we are eager to reach the widest audience possible.

The Timing Is Perfect...
Finally, let me say that the timing for this film, right now, gives us the greatest opportunity for impact and change. At this very moment, the Safe Act has been reintroduced to the new congress, and there is a short window of opportunity to make clear to our representatives that this bill needs a proper chance to become law.
The Safguard American Foods Export Act, or Safe Act, as it's called, would install a permanent ban on horse slaughter in the United States and the shiping of American horses elsewhere for slaughter. If we act quickly, this bill might not suffer the same fate as similar bills preceeding it, which expired before they even had a chance to be properly reviewed.
The voices of the people can ensure that the bill has a fair chance, and the more voices the stronger. The documentary film, Kill Pen, can help in spreading the word about the plight of America's horses, and help increase the volume of that public voice.
Please consider helping in any way possible. We are grateful for your support!
