RanselBuku Library for Village Kids
Hello Everyone,
Ransel Buku has been working for almost 3 years now in the river-side villages in Central Kalimantan, Indonesian Borneo, to help facilitate the children from these poor communities to get access to books.
During our work in the villages building and managing the project to bring more positive impacts to the community, we found out that a library (that also acts as a hub for the community, a resource centre) is needed to be built.
Why do we want to build a Library (and a Resource Centre) in Katimpun?
1. There is no Library or resource centre in the village
2. Library is a focal point for community education. We want to demonstrate that library plays a very important and significant role in bringing information through books for these people in the village.
3. Library is important partner in child development.
Through library collections, programs, and physical spaces, children learn to share, to be engaged in their communities, to participate in the arts, and to explore their immediate world and the world at large.
4. To have a library/resource centre built, we are hoping to reach not only the children, but also the parents; the adults of the village to come and use this building as a place where village meetings can be conducted, or as a place where livelihood trainings take place. As we are also aiming to bring more volunteers for the program and hoping to provide simple rooms in the resource centre as a place where they can stay during their work in the village.
5. Our teachers do not have the facility to store our growing book collection and to teach the children. So far we have been using any available facilities in the village such as mosques, churches, people's houses, gardens/yards, even the river bank ground under a tree to deliver our classes. Books are stored in our teachers' houses and as the number is growing we need to get the books organized in a much better way.
6. And many other good reasons to build one :)
We'd like to invite you to be involved in this great cause, so we all can support the community together. We are aware that this is not only a work of one organization to make it happens, it takes us all to do this hand in hand. It is our duty to help facilitate and assist them to get the chance to improve their lives.
