My name is Katelyn Kean and I am a current sophomore at St. Mary's College of Maryland.
This summer I hope to be taking a trip to the Gambia in West Africa. The trip will last two months, leaving May 20th and returning on July 8th, and will consist of working on the Banjul Heritage Project along side of my advisor and fellow classmates. In this program I will be working and digging on an archeological site as well as working with the community and a local museum to establish a composed presentation of the history of the Banjul culture and the culture in Africa. I have known since becoming a student at St. Mary's College of Maryland and declaring as both an Anthropology Major and History major with a minor in Museum Studies that I wanted to participate in the Gambia Field Studies Program. Overall, I will be working with the surround village, the Gambian community, and the archeological as well as history record in West Africa, which will be an eye opening opportunity.
Programs like this not only provide a teaching experience for students but also affect society on a larger scale. By traveling to West Africa and working in the Peace Program, I will be helping establish a communication between nations and cultures as well as observing and participating in different cultural perspectives.
To seize this wonderful opportunity I am hoping to raise $5,000 dollars. I know this sounds overwhelming but every little bit would help! The cost will cover the price of the program, fixed cost, vaccinations, and most importantly transportation to get to Africa.
This truly is a fantastic experience and I would love to be able to participate. Even if you cannot donate please share to others and get the word out!
