London Colvin is a 21 year old Norfolk State University Junior and Military Reservist, who has now suffered significant injuries after a brutal attack by a police dog.
While in attendance of an off-campus party on the night/early morning of January 24, 2015, a fight broke out and law enforcement was called to the scene. As she was leaving the party, well away from the scene of the fight, London was approached for questioning by officers. But, because she had no involvement in the fight, she did not want or feel the need to answer any questions, as she felt she had no information to offer. Though she refused to answer the questions, the officers continued to persue her and feeling hounded, she admittedly grew irritated. This eventually led to the officers attempting to detain her and rightfully so, she wanted to know why - which was never disclosed to her. In the process, London was restrained and brought to the ground by more than one officer; according to the officers, they felt it necessary to have a K-9 released on her even though she was on the ground, face down and did not pose a direct threat to anyone at the time. Not even the officers.
As a result of this traumatic event, London received 40 stitches and has a large portion of flesh missing now, that was so severe, it could not be safely closed with stitches, therefore it is now an open wound and risks infection. Doctors have stated that this larger wound will need plastic surgery. Even though London is a part of our Miltary, as a Reservist, her benefits differ from those who serve on Active duty, thefore we are hoping to tap into all resources available and raise funds to help offset these medical costs, as well as legal costs.
While London is a resilient young woman and is dealing with this as best as can be expected, it is our duty as her family to protect her and aid her in recovery, in any way possible. This includes alleviating as much stress as we can, whether it is financially, physically or even emotionally. Healing is not just physical and the more support we can show her she has from her community and friends, the better.
We appreciate all of the prayers, well-wishes and support that her story has received in such a short time. It is being asked that, even if you are unable to donate, that you please continue to get her story shared and effect change in a positive way. And should you be able to donate, please remember that no amount is too small.
