ABOUT JU'S SUICIDE PREVENTION WEEK
Last year Dolphin Productions, Jacksonville University's student-run programming board, held its first Suicide Prevention Week with the theme "Turn Up the Love." This year Active Minds at JU, a student organization focused on mental health awareness, will be spearheading the university's second annual Suicide Prevention Week on September 9th-13th.
2013 SUICIDE PREVENTION WEEK
This year's theme is "Save the Day" and will have a superhero twist promoting that anyone can be a hero and that we all need to be around to help fight for the greater good. We hope to make it much more effective this year and have a bigger impact on campus and in the community due to high suicide rates in college and with high attempt rates (twice the national average) with youth in Duval. Nationally, suicide is the second leading cause of death among college students, but is completely preventable.
With half of a shoestring budget, we are reaching out to organizations on and off campus searching for sponsors and reaching out to friends and family to help raise money to make this week life-changing. We are also working closely with our counseling center and will be promoting their services throughout the week.
Events during the week will include a superhero photo shoot, candlelight vigil, suicide prevention training, a letters to soldiers session, an open mic night, a do-it-yourself superhero costume contest, and hopefully much more.
Donations will go towards supplies needed for this week and, if possible, t-shirts. Last year "Free Hugs" shirts were successfully handed out and are still worn today. The shirts help carry on a message of hope beyond just the week.
