Please help us to help! Author and editor, S.A. Meade/Sue Meadows’ husband, Peter, was diagnosed with stage IV oesophageal cancer in September 2013. The prognosis for this type of cancer is bleak—once the cancer has metastasised. (link to relevant page on Cancer Research UK website:  http://www.cancerresearchuk.org/about-cancer/type/oesophageal-cancer/treatment/statistics-and-outlook-for-oesophageal-cancer) Peter has undergone chemotherapy, and while that has helped in many ways, it hasn’t stopped the cancer spreading to his liver and lungs. Although a second round of chemotherapy could prolong Peter’s life for another couple of months, it would mean those months would be spent feeling tired and worn out. Peter has chosen not to go through with the second round, preferring to spend what time he has left enjoying a reasonable quality of life.

Sue is the only earner in the family. Their son, Nat, is 16 and is coping admirably but as you can imagine, the toll of keeping it all together and putting on a brave face is a very tough one for him and Sue—and Peter, who is incredibly amazing in how he’s dealing with this. What we would really like to do is raise enough money for Peter to have a shower fitted. It’s difficult for him to get in and out of the bath, and as time goes on it will prove even harder. We would also love to raise enough money for the family to take weekend breaks away from home, with spending money, while Peter can still be taken places. The household income doesn’t run to any of these things. Any raised money left over will be used for day-to-day expenses to make life for them all a little easier, and hopefully, if we raise enough, a new mattress for when Peter becomes bedbound. Sue is his only carer, and it would be nice for her to also have family breaks so they can all forget about the world for a couple of days at a time and create wonderful memories to look back on. As Sue works during the week, the weekend breaks would be ideal.

Peter was given his final prognosis last week. While his liver is still functioning reasonably well, he has limited time left. Can you help us to make his life more comfortable? The shower alone would be an utter godsend. As a writing community, we are known for our compassion and our support of fellow authors. Even if you can only afford £1/$1, every single penny counts. Please. Please dig as deep as you can so that we can alleviate some of the worry and suffering.

Thank you so much in advance.
