GOOD NEWS! I got a loan to cover grad school!
BAD NEWS: I still need to fundraise for pre-departure expenses!
If this is your first time on the page, here's what's up: I have received admission to the London School of Economics and University of Southern California to complete a two-year dual MSc degree in Global Media and Communications for the academic years of 2014/15 and 2015/16.
It is a highly competitive program that only selected 44/ 339 applicants last academic year; therefore it would be a shame to turn down this opportunity.
I have been awarded 9880 pounds of financial assistance out of a tuition of 17880 pounds, and now students loans.
FINANCIAL BREAKDOWN
Per the official university guidelines, here is the estimated cost of pre-departure expenses(I have converted from pounds to USD for simplicity purposes)
Housing Deposit: $500
Visa Application: $550
Airfare: $1,000
Functioning Laptop: $1500
Functioning Phone: $450
Week in London Pre-Loan: $1000
*Pre-departure expenses are a priority to get the ball running.
I do indeed work and have a savings account, so if you are wondering what I will be doing with my income and why you should give, know that I will be spending my income the next couple of months:
1. Paying off my credit card bill-it added up for the months I was laid off
2. Saving up to visit my dad in the hospital in Canada before I depart
3. Saving up to contribute to my predeparture expense
4. Paying bills etc
5. PAying for driver's ed so I can get my license before I leave.
6. Shopping (for necessary items ie. raincoat and umbrella)
BUT YOU DON'T KNOW ME, WHY SHOULD YOU GIVE?
1. I am asking politely :)
2. I am a hard worker: Graduated college with honors, worked on a presidential campaign, managed a local city council race all by the age of 20. My work ethic won't change at LSE/USC.
3. I'm working 2 jobs to save, not just asking for your money
4. I have a vision for the media industry to shift away from the "Single story" as Chimamanda Adichie notes, to feature multidimensional perspectives and characters.
5. Because I am a nice person. I promise!
6. Because by helping me, you'll be helping others
7. Because I need you to not only believe but invest in tomorrow's leaders.
8. Because Oprah, Ellen and Tyler Perry aren't responding to my letters, emails and tweets
9. Because as a young girl growing up in Africa, I could never have dreamt of this opportunity and now that it is unfolding before my eyes, it would kill me to let this dream slip away
10. Because I will be eternally grateful.
