 Allow Us To Introduce Jorge

On April 7, 2019 Jorge Madrid won the New Mexico State Golden Glove Boxing Championship. He did this by beating Codi Chavez, the 2018 New Mexico state and regional champion.  This accomplishment will enable Jorge to compete in the regional tournament in Denver, Colorado on April 27th, and if he wins he will compete in the 5-day national tournament in Chattanooga Tennessee (date is still undetermined).

Let me tell you about Jorge.  Jorge is a U.S citizen and a senior at Deming High School in Deming, New Mexico.   He lives in Palomas, Chihuahua, Mexico, and during the school year he gets up before dawn crosses the border and catches a bus to school.  After school, he goes to a deserted classroom that we call our gym and trains for 2-3 hours.  After his workout, he returns to Palomas and trains 10 neighborhood kids for another hour or two.  On the weekends, he helps his mother sell tortas on the streets of Palomas.

During the summer he works as a farm laborer, getting up each morning at 4:00 A.M, catching the farm bus to the fields, and working in 100+ degree temperatures until 3:00 P.M.  After work he then go to our boxing gym and trains for 2-3 hours.  Although Jorge was born in the United States and is an American citizen and a member of USA Boxing, his brother and parents are Mexican citizens who have been denied visa renewals by the Trump Administration.  This means that neither of his parents nor his brother are able to watch him box in the United States.

Jorge will graduate from high school in May and plans to attend college in the fall.  His goal is to become a physical education teacher and professional boxer. I am Jorge’s coach.  For 48 years I was a football coach in the U.S.A.  During my years as a football coach, I was fortunate to have coached high school and college All Americans and NFL players, but I can honestly say that I have never been associated with another athlete who has worked as hard and sacrificed as much as Jorge.   Jorge belongs to the Palomas-Mex-Boxing team, a name that a bunch of kids from Mexico created 4 years ago.

This is Our Story

Palomas-Mex-Boxing started four years ago when I volunteered to teach kids how to box in a gym in Palomas, Mexico (I live 4 miles from the Mexico border in Columbus, New Mexico).  We had a good program going until the owner of the gym decided to convert the building into a factory.  Below are two pictures of a few of a few of the boxers that I trained when we were in Mexico.

When our Palomas gym was converted into a factory we became homeless.  After many unsuccessful searches for a new venue, the mayor of Columbus, New Mexico offered us two unoccupied classrooms in a vacant school.  Unfortunately, only three of our Mexican boxers were able to legally cross the border.   None the less the four of us got busy and began working again.  Below are three pictures of our “classroom boxing gym” and the original three boxers who started the program in Columbus.

All three of the original Columbus boxers became members of USA Boxing and successfully competed in tournaments in both the U.S.A and Mexico.   The notoriety achieved by these three, generated interest on both sides of the border.  I presently train approximately 14 young men and one young lady in Columbus, and Jorge trains 10 young men in Palomas.  Each day our numbers seem to grow, especially since Jorge has become a state champion.

Most of our boxers come from families that struggle financially, and we do not charge them anything to train; consequently, for the past four years the cost of equipment, membership fees, and travel expenses to tournaments and sparing sessions have been donated by my wife and me, but now that Jorge is beginning to compete in more prestigious tournaments across the country, and a number of our other boxers will soon begin competing, we will be unable to meet all of the travel expenses, membership fees, etc.  For this reason any help that you might provide will be greatly appreciated.
