Seeds of Living Education (SOLE) is a not for profit that was born from the building and growth of a children's community garden in the Village of Hamburg, NY at Union Pleasant Elementary School, THE GIVING GARDEN! The Giving Garden is a beautiful outdoor classroom built in 2009 to teach children where their food comes from and to encourage healthy food choices. If they grow it, they will eat it! SOLE oversees events and programs for The Giving Garden, maintenance of the garden and equipment, sharing experiences and resources for other gardens, and shares Garden Club at Union Pleasant.
Thanks to your support, Hamburg Central Schools administration and staff support and the timeless efforts of amazing children and their families, SOLE has been able to provide seed money for gardens to be built in almost every school in Hamburg Central School District. Union Pleasant Elementary being the first, followed by Charlotte Avenue Elementary, Boston Valley Elementary, Hamburg Middle School and Armor Elementary coming in the spring of 2015. The gardens have invaluable volunteer support from Hamburg High School. High School students volunteer for work in the garden, art, videoing, photography and more. Each garden is beautifully unique and gives families, community groups and teachers opportunity to be involved in their gardens. Hamburg is the only school district outside of Buffalo growing gardens at every school.
SOLE and The Giving Garden enrich the lives of children and their families through Garden Clubs and hands on classroom experiences, healthy tastings, field trips to BeHealthy Institute, exercise and wellness in the garden, chef experiences, garden tours, programs with local garden experts and Local Living Fairs connecting families to farmers and small local businesses that support happy and healthy families. The growth of SOLE and The Giving Garden has created a healthy ripple effect throughout the community.
SOLE & The Giving Garden are seeking funds to assist in the purchasing of materials needed for maintenance of The Giving Garden; tools and equipment, as well as posts and sailcloth for the classroom circle, funds to be able to offer discounted field trips to teachers and their classes and to possibly fund a garden and farm tour in late summer, early fall to share Hamburg Central School District's gardens. SOLE would also like to continue to provide seed money and support to volunteers to create and sustain children's community gardens throughout Hamburg.
Community Gardens beautify and enable children, families, classes and community groups hands on gardening experiences, nurturing a sense of community, building pride in hard work and encouraging good health and nutrition by teaching where food comes from!
