Kalonda's Story
Hello to all,
Thank you for viewing this page, a memorial to the kind and gentle light in this world that was Kalonda Hawkins. The story of her beautiful life ended on a day when around the world, the emotion of "LOVE" is immortalized in actions, gifts, and words. Kalonda epitomized the words "love," "care," and "strength," among others. A single mother of a 3 year old son, Zander, who above all cherished family and being an independent support system for him and those around her. She was a hard-working colleague, a steadfast friend, and above all a warming presence even on the worst of days imaginable. She could put a smile on your face even if you thought it impossible. The fire that was Kalonda, will always be remembered and it will continue to burn in her young son.
That's what brings me to creating this page: As her colleague I became acutely aware of Zander's aptitude as Kalonda would mention his love of school and his keen intelligence for someone his age. It became quite apparent that her desire for him to have a quality education was a top priority. I reach out to you know, fellow New Orleanians, fellow Audubon Employees, fellow human beings, to help make this woman's dream for her son an actuality. She would've worked as hard as she could to make this happen, and now it is our turn to assist her.
How we've calculated our goal:
Avg Price Per Year for Four Year College:
$30,000 X 4 = $120,000
Avg Price of Text Books/Room/Board:
$5,000 X 4 = $20,000
8% Go-Fund-Me hosting:
$10,000-$12,000; dependent upon amt. raised
I will end with this anecdote:
Too often in this world are bright lights snuffed out by the carelessness of others, but so long as their embers remain, the flame can be rekindled in the hearts and minds of other compassionate souls.
