DONATION REQUEST PURPOSE: To make this youth development program accessible, affordable and or free for every child who desires to become a member. We offer children the opportunity to experience the excitement of track and field while encouraging the consumption of healthy food and beverages as well as academic achievements.

 SUMMMARY:
Due to budget cuts, West County School District has reduced and or eliminated sports activity in most of their schools.
1.  71% of our children living in WCSD do not get the     recommended amount of physical activity to live a healthy life.
2.  Lack of physical activity negatively affects children’s basic education.
3.  In the urban districts graduation rates are 58%. 4. Crimes committed by juveniles’ peak between the hours of 3-6p.m.
5. 26% of school age children are on their own after school.
6. Our youth development program is a track and field program which has fees.  Fees disproportionately affect children from low-income families; they are 4 times more likely to quit a sport due to costs.
7. Our youth development program, Hercules Running Rebels is designed to benefit children in the areas of physical activity, obesity, affordability, and education. 8. The Hercules Running Rebels submits this donation request to cover part of the expenses associated with this youth development group.

NEED:
1. Because sports programs are one of the most cost-effective activities that promote positive youth development, there is a need to keep our youth development club to be affordable to all youth who wants to join.
2. Our schools are experiencing tough budget periods, and are forced to cut some or all of physical activity.
Lack of regular physical activity negatively affects children education.
3. Because of lack of physical activity and poor eating habits1 out of 3 children between the ages of 2 to 19 are overweight or obese.
4. 71% of youth do not get the recommended amount of physical activity to live a healthy life.
5. School-age children are on their own after school between the hours of 3p.m. and 6p.m., during the peak hours of juvenile crime where children experiment with drugs, alcohol, cigarettes and sex.
6. 1 in 4 middle and high school age students are victims of violence at or around school.
7. In WCUSD the demographics are 118,341 White, 43,403; Black, 13040 American Indian, 78,851 Hispanic.
8. However at Richmond High School – 76.43% Hispanic with 75% participating in a free or reduced lunch; Hercules High School – 14.9% Black; 9.9% Hispanic – with 9% participating in the reduced price or free lunch program; and Pinole Valley High has 40% Hispanic, 17% black – with 56% participating in the free or reduced lunch.
9. There is a need for an affordable positive and safe environment for our local children to come to and have a feeling of belonging.

PROGRAM:

To address the need of our community, the Hercules Running Rebels is requesting donations from several funding sources so the Hercules Running Rebels can offer an affordable program  to all of its members. The Hercules Running Rebels begin training on October 4, 2014, and will end the track and field season August 1, 2015.

Our children live in the three connecting counties, Alameda, Contra Costa and Solano, most of them living in Richmond, Hercules, Rodeo, and Pinole. The Rebel program has 4 priorities; the whole child, education, health, and physical activity.  Our program is designed to meet the needs of all participants regardless of level of skills.  Our training is designed to fight obesity and diabetes.  Our workouts burn maximum calories and build muscles.  We compete locally, state and nation-wide.

We teach life lessons by coaching, examples, and instructions.  We support healthy eating by instructions, newsletter, and meal plans to both the athlete and the parents, and we provide healthy snacks and beverages to our athletics and coaches during competitions and training.

We require our athletes to maintain a 2.75 GPA.  We recognize those athletes who maintain the required GPA and offer tutoring to athletes who are having difficulty.  In 2014, we started an Alumni Graduation Scholarship Program, which is an incentive for all our athletes.

We contribute to our community by volunteering at events. As a team we have volunteered at 5-k runs, Christmas programs, senior citizen events, and more.  Our mission is to inspire children to reach their full potential by developing character, strength, endurance, self-esteem, accountability, self-discipline, good sportsmanship, and perseverance.  Discrimination or bullying is not tolerated by the coaches, the Board, the parents or athletes.
Our Goal:  To make this youth development program affordable to all participants.

OBJECTIVES
1. To improve our children’s grades and help them to want to stay in school.
2. To improve their academic behaviors, that is, classroom behavior, attendance, homework completion, reporting on time.
3. To improve cognitive skills and attitudes, that is attention and concentration, memory and verbal ability skills.
4. To teach our athletes to work as a team and to set and obtain personal goals.
5. To teach our athletes how to be physically healthy and stronger self-esteem.
6. To improve muscular strength and endurance and to reduce the risk of developing disease and obesity.
7. To improve upon our program for healthy beverages snacks, menu planning.
8. To teach our athletes to make smart choices about drugs, alcohol, and promiscuous sex.
9. To teach our athletes about conflict resolution skills, reduce violent behavior.
10. To help our athletes to develop healthy social skills and character strengths.
11. To offer a safe haven during peak hours for juvenile crime, after school 3 to 6p.m. and on weekends.
12. To give children a place they can connect to, and have fun doing so.
13. To teach our athletes about giving back, about making the right choice to better their lives.

Evaluation:
Our program is evaluated by a couple of methods.  For the first time, in 2014 at the end of the season, we asked our parents to complete an evaluation form of how they felt we did as an Organization.  Some reports were all complimentary, while others gave constructive feedback and suggested areas of improvement.  We used this tool to evaluate ourselves, and as another learning element.  Some of their suggestions were very good and will be implemented into how we operate.  We also evaluate by observation of the improvements in our athletes personal behaviors, educational behaviors, eating habits, and improvements in track and field skills.

The health will be evaluated visually;  is the athlete injury prone, does the athlete make the right snack and beverage choices when given the opportunity, if the athlete was overweight, has he/she lost weight, improved muscle tone.  Does the athlete have stronger muscles, and stamina?  The education will be evaluated on simply, are the grades improving, are children who need help getting that help from us; are behaviors improving in school and out of school, are children using conflict resolution to resolve issues may arise.
