Help CORA Drive Away Hunger This Winter and Beyond with our own Delivery Truck!

Chatham County Moves CORA Forward with Roof & Facility Improvement Partnership

Chatham County staff and officials have agreed to expedite planning and funding of the roof replacement portion of our facility upgrade in order to more quickly address health and safety needs for CORA Food Pantry staff, volunteers, and clients. We appreciate their leadership to “raise the roof”!
CORA Food Pantry provides a week's worth of food to food insecure Chatham County, North Carolina families. Last fiscal year CORA distributed 217 tons of food, enough to feed about 17,000 individuals for an entire week. This year, with the help of many community supporters and more than 200 pantry volunteers, we expect to distribute a week’s worth of food for more than 20,000 people! To meet increased demand for emergency food support due to population increases, public policy changes, and economic uncertainty experienced by many of our neighbors, we have partnered with Chatham County to improve our operations and services capacity. This public/private partnership will involve building a warehouse, replacing our roof, and complete other renovations. The county has committed $300,000 in this year's budget for the project, and CORA is committed to raising the additional funds needed for equipment and finishing work customized to our needs.
At this time, our current goal is to raise funds for our highest priority need –a delivery truck. Thanks to the generosity of 46 community members we have raised about half the funds needed towards our $40,000 goal.
Why does CORA need a truck? Last year volunteers and staff moved 220 tons of food in and out of CORA’s food pantry with the simplest equipment. Having our own food delivery truck will allow us to plan more efficient food pickups from regional banks (6 to 8 pallets of food at once, as compared to volunteer pickup trucks and vans). We will have more control to schedule deliveries at times that match the availability of volunteers. Our food budget will go farther because we will be able to take advantage of special, large volume discount food purchases. Using our own truck will also give us more flexibility to schedule pickups of more fresh produce from community gardens and donations from neighborhoods and workplaces. And next summer a truck will help us serve more children in our growing SNACK Program’s 14-plus sites countywide. Your contribution in any amount will help us raise the remaining $15,000 to put our volunteers in the driver’s seat! If we reach this goal by October 20th we can take advantage of a special vehicle purchase opportunity.
