'Going Places' fund

We are six Drama, Applied Theatre and Education students at The Royal Central School of Speech and Drama. As part of our Collaborative Outreach programme we are currently in the process of setting up a theatre company  called Art Box Productions.

We are a not for profit, inclusion driven company striving to challenge the lack of accessibility on London Transport working with a cast of eight actors and musicians with learning disabilities from Mencap.

Mencap pride themselves on working in partnership with people with learning disabilities to provide services to support people to live the life they want too and this is something we have put at the forefront of our project and our method of work.

Our work is already taking shape and we have started writing a script called ‘Going Places’. The show will include music, multimedia, comedy and real life stories of problems and discrimination people have come across on transport to get around their own city. As we know, London is a beautiful yet tricky city to navigate and sometimes this is made more difficult by a physical disability or a learning disability. The show aims to challenge the movers and shakers of Transport for London about the lack of step free access- 225 of the 270 tube stations in London cannot cater for somebody with a physical disability. About the lack of easy read information on platforms - a lot of people with a learning disability find it hard to make sense of the small print on the tube maps, these are small adjustments that can be made easily and helping people to travel freely around their home town. But ultimately we want to challenge some individuals behaviour to people they view as ‘different’ to them.

Whilst we are students, we have recently found out our project will not be supported in funding from our school as we are staying in London and basing our project in our local community. We really would love to gain support to help encourage a group of talented ambassadors for people with learning disabilities to have their voices, opinions and stories heard on a public and theatrical platform. To enable our show to be taken seriously we would like to have not only professional rehearsal spaces but we would like to have access to a big and well known theatre, but these cost money that, at the moment we don’t have.

We are currently in the process of looking into a theatre to hire to have our stories heard. The money donated on this page is going to contribute to theatre hire costs, rehearsal space and ensuring we can make this project as worth while as possible.

Thank you for supporting our project.
