HS Engineering Club: Ethanol-Powered Vehicle

Donation protected
We are a group of High School students brought together by our love of vehicles, internal combustion engines, and understanding mechanics. With such a passion for cars, we decided it would be a great idea to found our own Engineering Club at our high school in Montreal, Canada with the intention of building our own car. As youth who can still absorb this knowledge quickly, this personal project is an ideal and valuable way of using our time to get a head start developing knowledge about Mechanical, Electrical, and Chemical Engineering, consequently opening up possible career opportunities for the future.

Our car will solely run on 190 proof ethanol. Therefore, it will not contain any fossil fuels. We understand that the production of ethanol will use corn crops and will increase the amount of agricultural resources toward an inedible product. However, modifying the engines of non-electric vehicles worldwide to run on such a fuel will help decrease the effects of climate change since ethanol is known to be nontoxic. It releases fewer greenhouse gases than commonly used fuels such as gasoline and diesel. Using ethanol as an international vehicle fuel instead of gasoline or diesel would additionally reserve the diminishing amounts of fossil fuels on Earth for other, more useful consumption in medical products, toiletry products, heating and cooling, and so on.

We have already purchased a motorcycle engine from a totaled Honda VFR 800. We successfully turned it over after lots of work, and we are planning to study it more closely with professional help to alter and tune it to be suitable for the consumption of ethanol.

We need your help to commence the second phase of our project: building the body of the vehicle. Here is a list of components that will be purchased with your donations:

          - lower and upper control arms for front wheels

          - lower and upper control arms for rear wheels

          - suspension for all four wheels

          - wheel bearing and housing for all four wheels

          - braking system

          - steering system

          - drivetrain components: cv axles, chain differential, and chain

          - chassis tubing

We only have two more years to complete our project, so time is very limited. Without your donations, we cannot proceed.
