How Many Roads

We will show - so you can see it,
Listen - so you can hear it,
Discover - for you to understand the world anew.

On September 1st 2014, four friends with a passion for the unusual are going on a trip around the world. Why? As Douglas Adams so elegantly put it in The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, "žIt's partly the curiosity, partly a sense of adventure".

The Motivation
Everyone has at least considered traveling around the globe at some point in their lives. More often than not, the motivation for the journey is simply widening horizons and having fun. Also, it's almost inevitably a dream that never actually comes true.
We've had our fair share of adventure, as well as running the mill nine to five and now it's time for us to embark on a soul-searching journey that will change our lives. We intend to do it properly "“ documenting our experience on our website, taking photos, recording videos and interacting with both the people we meet and the people that support us from home. We will show the world that breaking routine and exploring the world is possible, even if you're not experienced - all you need is determination to pursue your dream.

In Bob Dylan's "Blowing in the Wind" the first line of the song ("How many roads must a man walk down?") is the same question Douglas Adams proposes as the Ultimate Question in his legendary novel The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. And the answer "“ 42. This is what we intend to do "“
"¢ visit 42 countries,
"¢ travel by 42 different means of transport,
"¢ perform 42 random acts of kindness,
"¢ meet 42 everyday heroes,
"¢ see 42 awe-inspiring landscapes,
"¢ acquire 42 million memorable impressions,
"¢ place 42 geocaches in amazing places,
"¢ come back with 42 ideas and revelations about ourselves, the world and people in it.

The Trip

Our journey starts with a train ride, from Latvia through Belarus to Ukraine. From there we pedal our way south to India, covering some 5000 kilometers through Moldova, Russia, Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Iran and Pakistan.
After that, it's buses, trains, ferries and, if necessarry, planes. If luck will have it, we'll get the legendary Tata Nano to drive around India. So far we've planned out the first part of our route "“ from Latvia to Australia, where we hope to arrive in the second quarter of 2015. After a short break from traveling, we will start the second part of our journey, visiting the Americas and Europe on our way back to Latvia.

The Participants
Our team consists of four people, each with unique perspectives and assets. We're not typical student travellers who want to free-ball through life until retirement. We understand that in order for this journey to turn out as planned, we have to work hard, and we are prepared to do that!

Dainis

After finishing his studies in law, Dainis became a white-collar office employee. After four years of work in an office, the travel bug has finally taken over, and now it's time for adventure!

Ivars

Despite having a degree in electrical and power engineering, being an electrician was never Ivars' calling. For the past five years he's been the IT administrator of the Latvian War Museum and an avid fan of geocaching, which more than explains his passion for adventure.

Krisjanis

Similar to Ivars, Krisjanis' education has no connection to his profession whatsoever. You wouldn't normally expect someone with a physics degree to go on a journey for two years, but this time it's exactly the case.

Laura

Besides her professional dream of becoming an architect, Laura has always wanted to explore and experience. With unquenchable cheerfulness she is always able to find the silver lining, even when no one else can.

Your Help
"Time is an illusion. Lunchtime doubly so." "“Douglas Adams

Although we're saving up and our planned stay in Australia includes a few months of work, we still need your support. In return for your kind donations, we will share our experience with you, offer you rewards and by acts of kindness give back to people in need.

If you have your own request (perhaps have us visit a special place or meet a special person), we will make it happen. Alternatively, if you have your own idea for a reward, donate any amount and we'll review your suggestion and add it to our list of rewards!

We will appreciate any help spreading the word about our journey, and we will be thankful for every cent you donate for our cause.
