IDP HIV/Medical Centre, Kenya

My name is Rebecca and I began volunteering in Africa in 2010. My parents grew up in Zimbabwe and Malawi so I have always been drawn to this amazing continent. In 2015 I spent a month voluntering with underprivileged people in Kenya. I was working with refugees of all ages at a camp for internally displaced persons. I also volunteered as a nurse at Kivuli medical centre (2+ hours matatu ride from the camp) with patients suffering from illnesses such as HIV, TB and malnutrition.

The 2007 post election riots left thousands of Kenyans homeless and traumatised by what they saw and experienced. These riots killed over 1200+ people and resulted in 500,000+ displaced persons with no homes. I was volunteering at a camp that holds >4,500 of these internally displaced persons and have personally witnessed the struggles that these people are going through.

They have no access to any medical support, supplies or funding within the camp, so this year our goal is to build them a HIV/medical clinic!

Initially we will be building a clinic for HIV+ people and from there applying for appropriate permits to practice medicine within the clinic.

This is such an important project, as so many diseases can be easily prevented through education, medication and immunisation. Access to health care is so important!

Our starting budget for the building is around $24,000. It will have 6 rooms and a waiting room. Once that is underway we will begin budgeting for what is needed inside the clinic. This is a massive project, but after having personally seen how much these people are suffering - it is very needed and worth it! We will use people from he camp in construction as we can, as well as volunteers and skilled professionals.

THIS YEAR I am hiking Kokoda with HIV Queensland to raise awareness for people suffering with HIV around the world. I will specifically be focusing on raising awareness for IDPs and the HIV medical centre in Kenya. This is going to be a HUGE challenge physically and mentally, and I would appreciate everyone's support!
