The Island Academy of Hilton Head

"A community for learning, creativity, empowerment, and imagination; a place where each learner discovers a sense of self, explores his or her place in the world, and develops the skills and wisdom essential for living the life he or she chooses."

The Island Academy of Hilton Head is a non-profit, inclusive, full-time, educationally-innovative K through 12 learning community. Each Island Academy learner is known and respected as a unique individual and community member.

We do things a little differently at The Island Academy - we learn by doing.  We learn by getting dirty, we learn by building things, and we learn by creating!

Financing an independent learning community is costly, and we stand on our own, apart from government funding: We are not privy to the tax pool that contributes to the education of the majority of our nation's learners.

Here is how you can help!  Even a minimal contribution of $1.00 funds a portion of our learners' projects.

$1.00  Seeds for our Organic Garden

$5.00  One week's worth of newspapers for our Current Events class

$10.00 Three month's worth of fish food for our aquarium

$20.00  Ingredients for one of our weekly Culinary Classes and Meal Sharing

$40.00  Engineering and Construction Supplies for one Student Project

$100.00  Student tickets to local dramatic presentations

$500.00  Musical Instruments

$1000.00  Down Payment on a School Van

$5000.00  Half tuition for a needy student

$10000.00  Full tuition for a needy student

We would be grateful beyond words for a contribution of any amount, and we will keep you updated on all of our amazing learners, what they are building, and how they are doing through our Student-Produced Island Academy Newsletter.

“If you give a man a fish, you feed him for a day.
If you teach a man to fish, you feed him for a lifetime”

Our long-term vision is to help build, connect, and foster cooperation between a nationwide network of small, innovative, child-centered learning communities.  We seek to spark and sustain a new model of education for the 21st century, one that empowers and inspires each student by recognizing and cultivating their individual interests, passions, and creative ideas.

Thank you for taking the time to learn about The Island Academy.
