They did it!!
Our kids, 5th graders from Hemmeter Elementary in Saginaw Township, MI – affectionately known as “The Cat Cuddlers” – coordinated a STEM Destination Imagination (DI) Service Learning event on January 12th, 2018 to raise community awareness of what happens to our pets when they are left outside in Michigan’s cold winter weather.
The team Partnered with the Saginaw County Animal Care and Control to collected data and bring awareness. You may have watched it on our local TV networks called “Freezin’ for a Reason”. Three animal control officers stayed out in the cold for 14 hours overnight to replicate what happens to animals left out in the cold. The team with help from a local paramedic monitored the officer’s vitals to show what can happen to animal left out in the cold. The team used that experience and data to create an 8 minute long presentation to demonstrate their findings and creative process. They received awards from the Saginaw County Board of Commissioners and were covered locally and nationally for bringing community awareness.
The team took first place in the regional competition. They went on to take third place in the State competition at Michigan State University on Saturday April 14th and won an invitation to the Global finals May 22-26, 2018 in Knoxville Tennessee.
The costs for the DI Global finals will cost $11,000. This is including travel for the team, lodging for 5 nights, meals, tournament entrance fees, and transportation of the set and equipment to the tournament. The school and the district are unable to provide any financial support and are also unable to assist in fundraising; the team is on their own to raise funds.
