Nepal - Gorkha Community Fund

Having returned from Nepal less than two weeks ago, it was with great shock and a heavy heart that I learned of the devastating earthquake that hit the region hard on 25 April 2015, causing massive destruction and loss of life.

During the weeks before, I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to trek to Everest Base Camp and Kala Patthar with 13 amazing people from around the world, along with two very special Nepali guides and seven strong and resilient porters.  In my short time there I fell in love with the mountains, the people and felt an affinity with the country that has now left me determined to help in any way I can.

Trekking in Nepal was a very humbling experience that I will never forget. Knowing that there are now over 6000 people dead and that thousands more have been left homeless,  I feel compelled to do anything I can, to make even a small bit of difference to the lives of those that are most in need.

Although there are several organisations raising funds for the people of Nepal, the majority of these funds are not reaching the remote villages. One of the areas affected the most and one of the closest to the epicenter of the earthquake, is the district of Gorkha where thousands remain without shelter, food and medicine.

Gorkha is close to my heart as this is the district where many of the guides and porters that work for the trekking company I travelled with, “ACE THE HIMALAYA” are from. It was heartbreaking to learn that so many of them were amongst those that lost thier homes.

It is my intention to raise as much money as possible between now and the end of June, when I will head back to Nepal taking every dollar raised directly to Gorkha and to the people that need it most.  Right now, the emergency response is the priority, but in the months ahead when interest in Nepal declines, it will be important that the much needed aid continue to reach the villages and that vital infrastructure be repaired or rebuilt.

I have chosen to partner with with Sambhav Nepal which means the funds raised here will be mobilised by the Nepali government-registered NGO Sambhav Nepal (http://www.sambhavnepal.org/). Sambhav Nepal has an excellent track record of 8 years working to achieve reforms in education and health and to improve living condition of Arupokhari and surrounding villages of Gorkha. The NGO was active prior to the earthquake in Arupokhari and has integrity, local knowledge and local contacts needed to avoid the pitfalls and waste of big aid efforts. So, donors to this campaign can be confident that their donation will be used wisely and well.

In consultation with Sambhav Nepal, we will identify where the funding is best utilised, with the focus being primarily on recovery and rebuilding.

Please help in any way you can either by donating or sharing this page with others.

Thank you for taking the time to read and share and for helping us help Nepal!
