Heather McNeil - #TEAMSOGB

Heather started skating two years ago with Iskate, an inclusive skating club, part of the Special Olympics GB family. Since then she has won one gold and three silver medals. Training and competing have shown Heather that it’s not that she can’t do something; it’s that she can’t do it…yet. Heather now focuses on what she can achieve and how she can develop.
Heather has been selected to represent Great Britain in the Figure Skating competition at the Special Olympics World Winter Games in Austria in 2017, one of the biggest events in the Special Olympic global calendar which will attract over 3,000 athletes with intellectual.
Skating, and being chosen for the Special Olympics World Winter Games, have shown Heather that she is part of a team, given her a wider pool of friends, which is tremendous progress for her and makes her feel fabulous.
For Heather going to the Special Olympics World Winter Games will be an opportunity to show herself what she can do and not be nervous about competing. After the event, she wants to get even better at skating.
For the athletes, going to the Games is not only about participating in their chosen sport: it’s about meeting athletes from around the world, making new friends, having fun, daring, improving their health and challenging preconceptions about people who have an intellectual disability.
