Everyone has a story, everyone has something they are passionate about, and for me that is Huntington's Disease (HD). About three years ago I was volunteering at a Huntington'S Disease Society of America (HDSA) walk. I began talking to a woman about her struggles with her husband and i immediately knew that i was lucky enough to be in the presence of some of the strongest, most inspirational people i have ever met. That day they changed my life. Since then, I have been a part of the HDSA CT chapter continuing to help them with this fight.
HD is a genetic neurodegenerative disorder that is caused by one dominant allele in our dna. A child of a parent who has HD has a 50% chance of developing the disease.. This is responsible for coding the correct sequence and number of amino acid repeats (CAG) in turn coding for a protein (Huntingtin protein). In its mutated form, the Huntingtin protein causes symptoms similar to Alzhiemer's and Parkinson's Disease - among other devestating, crippling symptoms.
It is human nature to want to make a difference, to make your mark, but very few know what to fight for. I choose to fight for those who can't. I choose to give hope to the families and fuel the fire toward a cure.
