Harley the Pom

I answered a 4 sale ad for a 3 year old Pom named Harley on 19 Jan 2014. When we arrived at Harley's house, we were greeted by the previous owner and her 4 children. After meeting everyone and seeing little Harley, I knew he was special. While there and deciding whether or not we could adopt Harley, the mother kept saying, "Harley is so good, he will let you do anything to him". The oldest child, approx 7, was quick to show us how she could pick up Harley and toss him in air and catch him on the way down. While I do not blame the children for their behavior, I was shocked that the mother said nothing to her daughter. As the little girl was attempting to provide us with a 2nd showing and the mother seemingly not about to say or do anything, I stepped in and said, "Oh, please don't do that we might be adopting the little pup and I saw enough the 1st time, thank you". Thankfully the little girl did not continue with tossing Harley in the air regardless at how unhappy she was with my request. I knew at that very moment there was no way I could leave that house without rescuing Harley. It was clear to me that with a few little boys upstairs and one little girl that it was time for Harley to get a break. Just how expensive that break would be, I was about to find out of the next few days.

We went to the Vet had blood work taken and had a complete physical done on him. With the purchase price that I paid for Harley plus the vet blood work, I am already out over $400 and I was given a quote for his dental surgery of $1695.00 to $2045.00. Sadly to say, the blood work came back that he is suffering from kidney failure and therefore the Veterinarian said that we can't go forward with the dental surgery because that would put his life at risk of not making it through the surgery. The dental surgery is so important because his mouth is so badly infected and soar that he was starving to death from not being able to eat. The vet prescribed Harley going onto the Hill RX prescription food diet and supplements and antibiotics in hopes that aggressively treating him, which I have started could help him to live longer and most importantly pain free. There is no idea of how much this could come to be financial at this point however he is worth the opportunity at a chance of a life that he deserves. Over the last few days, I have received many words of support as well as suggestions to help me better help Harley and I appreciate everyone of them. One of those suggestions was this very website to ask for financial donations from the community. I didn't know that this kind of help was out there however, I have come to depend on the people that I have met on Facebook that I believe them and feel in my heart that this is going to be the answer to enable me to be able to support Harley's needs. For this reason I have made my little Harley a promise to do all that I can to give him the best shot possible of beating this disease, that my vet told me was preventable. Harley never had to suffer these problems if only a few medical steps were made available to him at sometime during his few very short years of 3. Thank God for all who help me in the pursuit of happiness for the little guy known as Harley. I promise to those who help me by donating to this cause that I will continue to shower Harley with all the love and care and happiness. He will never know pain again, he will never be touched in a way to hurt him. I will continue to provide updates of him all along. The previous owners did offer to return to me the money that I paid for Harley but only if Harley was returned to them. I asked her if she would continue with Harley's medical treatment to which she responded NO she couldn't afford it. As I held in my anger, I than asked her if she would consider putting the money that I gave her towards Harley's ever growing medical bills and I would continue to treat him and give him a loving home. She responded to me that she would need to discuss this with her husband first and she would let me know. The next text was from her husband telling me that I should be ashamed of myself pressuring his wife to donate the money for Harley's vet bills and me still keep Harley. Who did I think I was to ask of such a thing and If I wanted my money, they are to get the dog back first and only when the dog is with his wife, would he than give me my money." As if I was holding the dog for ransom when in all reality that was my way of understanding the kind of character these people have and if they really did care about the animal for the animal's well being or was it for the amount of money the animal could bring them. I received my answer alright, loud & clear. I have kept all his text messages for anyone to review. My heart hurts at the thought of Harley being sold to another unknowing person or having to die a very painful death without medical intervention. On the other hand, this is quite the financial burden that i hadn't planned on undertaking. Sincerely....
