MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE

(A fictional scenario) A research airplane malfunctioned and crashed into Lake Powell.  Everyone on board survived, but the plane sank to the bottom.

The mission, should you choose to accept it, is to design and build an ROV (remotely operated vehicle) that can reach a sunken plane, open its side door, retrieve the black box, deploy oil absorption canisters in the airplane, and collect rock samples outside the airplane in TEN MINUTES.

After more than 30 hours of designing, building, testing and modifying, Mary and Emma’s hard work was put to the ultimate test: could their ROV (remotely operated vehicle) survive 10 minutes in the water, simulating an airplane crash recovery mission in Lake Powell?  The result?  “Two cousins in the fifth grade tried their hand at robotics for the first time and came out on top at an underwater competition” (KSL Contributor, Natalie Crofts).

Emma and Mary, otherwise known as “H2O Amigas,” weren't expecting to win Utah’s Underwater Robotics competition this year.  They were just excited to participate, do their best, and learn a lot.   But their ROV successfully completed 3 underwater tasks, and earned 856 points out of 1000 possible, making them the highest scorers out of 175 teams!

The H2O Amigas’ stellar performance earned them the right to compete at the National SeaPerch Challenge in Massachussetts in May.  But, unfortunately, not the funds required to make the trip back east with their guardians and coach.

Please help them reach their goal!  Any donation helps!

In the meantime, the H2O Amigas are working on modifying their ROV and poster, as well as preparing for the 20-minute presentation that is required at the national level of the Underwater Robotics competition.

Emma and Mary are so grateful for the time and effort that their coaches and mentors have given along the way, including father/uncle Michael Seeley, grandfather John Robison III, and interview coach James Dungkelberger.

Special Thanks to: Tadd Truscott, Kip Hacking, UUR,  BYU Engineering, Murray Aquatics Center (Amanda, Bud and Harper), Cathy Price, Beck Reading and Janel Williams.
