Growing Resiliency 4 Recovery

Donation protected
Our group, Resiliency 4 Recovery began with the needs of transitional aged youth who face mental health and substance use disorders and challenges. There is a serious lack of youth-directed peer support and recovery groups. R4R is a solution to this in our community and has already helped so many youth in a way that cannot be adequetly described and will continue to help so many more with your help.
In May 2012 five youth were brought together at a local non-profit organization to organize and initiate their own support group based on their emerging adult needs. Using the evidence based Resiliency Theory the youth were guided through a variety of brainstorming activities with the goal of developing an age specific group, by- youth-for-youth, to meet their recovery needs. Resiliency is the ability to bounce back from adversity even stronger. Relying on this powerful model, the once marginalized youth came together to form an exemplary recovery community.

“In helping others we help ourselves”

The group's mission since its creation is to find ways to improve the lives of young adults, and their allies in our community through recovery, life skills, and resiliency building in an inclusive, safe, understanding and stigma-free environment. The group has met consistently each week as not just the recipients, but also the givers of support. It's done marvels to improve lives. In addition to weekly meetings the group has expanded to provide members with many positive sober activities such as hiking, cooking classes, camping and so on, as well as community engagement opportunities that enhance the foundation of recovery and build on life skills.

In November 2015, the youth found a welcoming new home for their group.
The Anglican Church of the Incarnation in Oakville, which shares their vision of an expanding recovery community. The R4R group is excited about the potential opportunities available through this new partnership as an opportunity for growth.
