Save Daddy Nebrich!

Glioblastoma: A tumor which contains mix of cell types, and is highly malignant. Because these tumors form from normal brain cells, it's easy for it to thrive in normal brain tissue. Like many, the exact cause of this type of tumor is unknown, making it difficult to assign a form of treatment. A side note; difficult and frustrating. (KN)

Hi friends! As most of you know, my father (and best friend) was diagnosed with glioblastoma last June; basically a cancerous brain tumor was found. After radiation, chemotherapy, and surgery, we got the good news during chrismas last year that Louie was officially in remission. However about two weeks ago, our family received some not so great news that the stupid cancer was back and another tumor had formed. This time, it is inoperable and the doctors cannot use radiation. Our second opinion at Roswell agreed. So it's basically crunch time to do whatever we can for him. We have organized this fund with the next six months in mind but in no way does this mean that's all we have! We don't want to live our lives or make dad live his by a time line, we just want to prepare ourselves while doing our best to prolong his life as much as possible because let's face it, if anyone deserves the best treatment, it's daddy Nebrich. Our list of what we will use this fund for includes the Omega J8005 single gear masticating juicer, which is $260 on amazon. In my research, this was reviewed as the best because it's designed for but not limited to wheatgrass and is electric so my mom can use it; the manual ones wouldn't be nice to her arthritis. Although we were loaned a wheelchair for Louie, the wheels are little so he cannot move himself. A used manual wheelchair runs around $150. My sister is doing some baking with "therapeutic" oil which costed $2400 for the 6 month supply. We did the math and have been averaging one appointment copay per week; for six months that will equal $1200. Although, in the last week the copays have equaled about $400 and we are projecting that appointments will be more prevalent in the coming months. Medicine copays average around $300 per month. So we came up with $5,000 to start. We also are contacting steppenwolf to see if we can fly them in and give dad a jam session but we will get to that when we have more details. This fund was based on the expenses of what my family has decided is best along with the team of doctors working with us. We are asking for any kind of donations at all, even a dollar will help! Not only do we want my father to be comfortable, we want my mother to be, financially speaking, as well. If you personally know my dad (and mom), you know they are more than deserving of help. Thank you so very much for any help. Lets save daddy Nebrich together!!!(BN)

1.  A study published in the British Journal of Cancer, conducted by the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at Complutense University in Madrid, this study determined that Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and other cannabinoids inhibit tumour growth. They were responsible for the first clinical study aimed at assessing cannabinoid antitumoral action. Cannabinoid delivery was safe and was achieved with zero psychoactive effects. THC was found to decrease tumour cells in two out of the nine patients.

2. A study published in The Journal of Neuroscience examined the biochemical events in both acute neuronal damage and in slowly progressive, neurodegenerative diseases. They conducted a magnetic resonance imaging study that looked at THC (the main active compound in marijuana) and found that it reduced neuronal injury in rats. The results of this study provide evidence that the cannabinoid system can serve to protect the brain against neurodegeneration.

3. A study published in The Journal of Pharmacology And Experimental Therapeutics already acknowledged the fact that cannabinoids have been shown to possess antitumor properties. This study examined the effect of cannabidiol (CBD, non psychoactive cannabinoid compound) on human glioma cell lines. The addition of cannabidiol led to a dramatic drop in the viability of glioma cells. Glioma is the word used to describe brain tumour.  The study concluded that cannabidiol was able to produce a significant antitumor activity.

4. A study published in the journal Molecular Cancer Therapeutics outlines how brain tumours are highly resistant to current anticancer treatments, which makes it crucial to find new therapeutic strategies aimed at improving the poor prognosis of patients suffering from this disease. This study also demonstrated the reversal of tumour activity in Glioblastoma multiforme (KN)

                                              Medications

Temodar -  Temodar is an anti-cancer ("antineoplastic" or "cytotoxic") chemotherapy drug.  Temodar is classified as an "alkylating agent." It’s used specifically for brain cancer. After the original surgery, Lou was taking this once a day for 6 weeks along with the radiation. After that he was a 3 week off, 1 week on regimen that lasted until about a month ago when the latest test results came back proving it ineffective.
Side effects: nausea, vomiting, headache, constipation and fatigue
(KN)

Avastin Infusion - Non generic version of Bevacizumab. This is another form of chemotherapy that is administered intrveniously. A session lasts anywhere from 30 minutes to 90 minutes. Daddy Louie just started this form of treatment. So far there's been no side affects. But they include pain, nausea and vomiting, hair loss, nose bleed, and respiratory infection.
(KN)

Keppra - an antiepileptic drug. Because of the location and size of the tumor on my fathers brain, the pressure causes seizures.  A seizure was the catalyst for everything that's happened in the past year. Up until that day he was under the impression he was in perfect health.
Side effects: dizziness, weakness, bruising, tingling, numbness, and loss of appitite.

Lamictal - This is another antiepileptic medication. This one is primarily for Focal Seizures(localized seizures only affecting a specific portion of the brain), which are what my dad experiences.
Side effect: loss of coordination, dizziness, weakness, drowsiness, vivid dreams, insomnia, and anxiety.

Compazine - Also known as Prochlorperazine is an anti-psychotic used to treat schizophrenia. It also alieviates severe nausea and vomiting.

Zolfran - An anti-nausea medcation that's used specifically for patients undergowing cancer treatment.
