Global Friends for Nepal

Dear Global Friends,

As you all probably know, a massive 7.9 magnitude earthquake hit the country of Nepal on April 25th causing a death toll approaching 8000 displacing nearly 3 million people destroying tens of thousands of homes and crippling the infrastructure.

What you might not know is that I have a very good friend and partner in a hotel and culinary arts school in Kathmandu. My friend’s name is Samir and our school is AHA Silver Mountain Hotel School. I have been very fortunate to visit his beautiful country and family on several occasions with both my mom and Greg. Seeing the World Heritage Sites that date back to 5th century was a once in a life time experience. The Nepalese people have such a sense of pride in their culture and now these historic treasures are gone. Even the trails, roads and base camp at Mt. Everest have been severely affected by avalanches.

I can honestly say there are very few countries I have ever visited where the people make you feel so welcome and special. The Nepalese people are some of the poorest in the world yet there hearts and generosity ranks as some of the richest. I hope the rest of the world can now come together and give back to them.
Samir and his family are some of the lucky ones – they did not lose any immediate family members but they lost many friends. They also still have their home although just a couple doors down – a neighbor’s house collapsed killing 8 people. Samir’s backyard became a safe haven for his block as everyone slept in tents until the after shocks subsided.

We just added an addition to our school which became fully operational in recent months and Greg and I were to attend their grand opening this summer. Samir and his team were so proud as it has been a very long road to get this school built – It was the premier hotel and culinary arts school in Kathmandu.

The new part of our school was not damaged. However, the old part had many cracks and will need to be torn down and rebuilt. Ironically, it is now our school that is giving hope to the hopeless and this is where I need all of you.

Little did we know that our school would soon become a soup kitchen and shelter to over 100 orphaned children between the ages of 18 months and 11 years. These kids have lost their parents and it is our staff and students who are now looking after them until they can be placed in orphanages by the government. They are so innocent and some have no idea what has happened to their families.

Additionally, we have opened up a soup kitchen using our Culinary Arts labs. Our faculty and students are working more than 16 hours a day in order to feed not only the orphans in the school but the homeless on the streets.

The students and faculty are working selflessly and forgetting that many of them have also lost their homes and loved ones and must return to their own makeshift shelter in the evening.

Try to imagine heartache of our staff and my very close friends who are doing their best to make a horribly sad situation just a tiny bit better. It is my goal to raise at least $25,000 so our school can continue to buy basic necessities for the children, as well as food supplies and gas for their generator in order to continue to provide as many meals as possible for the children and the homeless sleeping in tents outside our school.

The gravity of this situation is really unfathomable to me – so for all of you who have never been to a developing country – I just want you to know how dire this really is for them. I will not forget Nepal. I want to let them know they have global friends who care about them in order to give them hope for a new Nepal.

A donation of any size would be greatly appreciated. If you can’t donate, please say a prayer for them and forward this link onto someone else who may care about our effort.

Thank you from the bottom of my heart,

Cindi
