HUGs - Helping Uganda's Girls

Donation protected
I've spent a lot of time in Uganda and have witnessed the extreme gender inequality in the regions I've stayed and visited. I started this project as the girls and women I have met deserve to feel safe and deserve to be educated (as do all women, of course!)

I started an appeal primarily to receive donations of new and used bras and sanitary towels to send to Another Hope Children's Ministries in Kampala, Uganda.

Another Hope is a children's home in the suburbs of Kampala. It is run by dedicated Ugandans with a commitment to give hope to orphaned, street children and children from impoverished families.

The home provides accommodation, food and clothing to orphans and street children in a family-like environment.

Another Hope provides school education whilst also taking care of the health and well being of the children.

I have supported Another Hope since 2010 when my husband and I lived and worked there and our hearts are forever there.

The older girls and mothers of the babies need bras and sanitary towels.

Bras and sanitary towels are very expensive and unfortunately, with paying for food, school fees and health services they come low on the list of priorities. BUT, in our opinion, they are a necessity. In Ugandan society, going bra-less leads some people to believe you are a prostitute. Obviously, this places the young women in a dangerous position and their safety is the highest on our list of priorities. The girls often miss school when they menstruate and their education is also right up there.

Every woman has the right to feel safe in her community and to receive an education on every day of the month!

The response to this appeal has been overwhelming. I received over 200 bras and 200 sanitary towels after a simple post on my local Mums Facebook page.

HUGs intends to receive and send your donations. The bigger picture includes a much more sustainable future. The long term vision is to support women in generating their own income by selling our donated bras.

I intend to travel to Kampala in the summer 2015 to distribute the donations and to identify the potential future business women.

Please contact me to discuss collection/delivery of donations or if you would like to get involved, if you'd like to fundraise for HUGs please do let me know!
