Mi Casa Uptown: A Memoire

“God has reminds us to plant ourselves where we are, build a family, love our neighbors, trust Jesus…”

Hey family and friends, can I share something with you?  I love my family.  I love my faith community.  I love New York City.  And it’s all because God’s love for this world has captured me.  Here’s a little more of what I’m trying to say…

“In our day and age, churches seem to be losing ground in the urban setting more than they are gaining.  It seems as though we’re working from behind, and in some senses, we are.  Churches, Christians and their Christianity don’t attract and I believe it’s because we’ve lost a deep sense of authenticity.  We’ve stopped offering the best kind of friendship that was offered to us by Jesus.  We’ve stopped hanging around the table to share stories that captivate, celebrate and challenge.  We’ve forgotten that in the city of God, the deepest sense of family will be the reality, and therefore compelling us to create and cultivate that now as the two worlds are set to collide.

Mi Casa Uptown is my story and maybe it’s the start of yours.  Over the years of living in my community as a non-believer, believer and now pastor, I’ve been pressed to more faithfully think through why we believe what we believe and do what we do.  I’ve been pressed to see that sharing your story will have greatest impact over the course of time while building intimate friendship with the ones you share it with.

What would happen if the Church loved the cities they were in more faithfully than we do now by passionately and consistently reminding ourselves of Christ’s love for us?  What would the depth of our impact look like if we planted ourselves in the fabric of our cities, loving it by the ways we celebrate and challenge it?  As megaphones in and of our culture, cities play a significant role in the coming kingdom of God.  Cities are filled with people and the Church is in the business of loving people.

Mi Casa Uptown is my story and how I’m learning to love NYC more faithfully to how God loves it.  But it can also be your story and how God has profoundly reminded you of how he has called you to plant yourself where you are, build family, love your neighbors, trust Jesus and die.”

This has been our journey ever since we knew God wanted us here in this neighborhood, in this city.  I pray that as you hear our story, you too would be inspired to be planted in your city; celebrating its successes, weeping over its brokenness, and investing the gospel of Jesus in it.  When you think of us pray for us.  But here’s a question…

Will you join us?  You’ve heard my heart for my city.  God, in his grace has afforded us a cool opportunity to put these stories, these lessons and visions for our city in a book.

I’ve been in conversation with WestBow Publishers, the self-publishing division of Thomas Nelson Publishers.  They’ve been great and have really caught the vision of Mi Casa Uptown.  In order to go through the process, there is a financial investment.  $2,000 will help us publish this book with a quality publisher and the strong potential of being picked up by Thomas Nelson.

I would love to have you join us in this effort.  Will you join us?
