On October 7, 2014 my life changed. It sounds so cliché, but hearing the words from my oncologist “Your biopsy came back positive, you have Stage IV Cervical Cancer” hung like an ominous cloud forecasting the unrest and turmoil that was to come. The natural question that followed, although regrettably so, was “How much time do I have?” To which she responded, “There is no cure; the average patient lives two years.” My heart sank and tears filled my eyes as I glanced at Mark and saw tears running down his cheeks.
There it was, a death sentence at 38 years old. My thoughts raced with questions of how could it be: “I’m healthy, I’m young, I live a good life, I help others, I teach college students to do the same, etc., etc., etc.;” however, in the end none of that mattered. All of my musings did not and will not change my situation. The important question became what would I do now, to which my heart responded, “I want to live. I want to continue to help others. I want to see our dreams come true. I want to grow old with my beloved.”
At first, I thought the best way to achieve my goal was through conventional medicine, but after one round of chemo I quickly realized that this was not my path; there had to be another way. SO, through a series of conversations with friends and family who have battled cancer and plenty of late night research endeavors, we discovered an alternative route: a road less traveled that is scientific, humane, and individualized. It’s called Oasis of Hope and it’s been alternatively treating cancer patients for the last 50 years with 2 to 3 times better results than the use of only chemo or radiation. Utilizing techniques used throughout Europe and other countries, I will receive a holistic treatment plan that takes into consideration my entire body targeting those areas that are cancerous while not neglecting my nutrition and immune system. But I need your help.
Like so many alternative therapies, insurance companies do not cover the expenses. This is where you can participate. I believe in your notes of compassion and support and want to offer you a tangible way to contribute. The cost of my personalized treatment plan is $35,000 and I firmly believe that as large as it seems it can be met through the generosity of financial gifts – large and small.
Mark and I have talked openly about my diagnosis and prognosis and we agree: we are children of the Resurrection of Jesus. Healing will come in one of three ways: through the miraculous, through the struggle of suffering and treatment, or through death and the final healing of eternal resurrection. In all, God is to be praised and trusted; not in some Pollyanna sense that doesn’t take seriously the reality and grief of the situation, BUT one that is squarely rooted in the Cross and the Resurrection of Jesus: an Incarnational reality that lives out Jesus’ words “In this world you will have trouble, but take heart I have overcome the world.”
RAISING HOPE is a witness and testament of that “ruthless trust.” Join me in finding an alternative way to walk the road of cancer, a way of love that is stronger than death.
