SBI Fundraiser

Dear Friends,

I need your support again. I’d like your help in raising funds for Sound Business, Inc. (SBI). I’ve had the privilege of serving on its board as Treasurer since June 2013, and have come to appreciate the effort SBI puts into preparing high school students for admission into selective undergraduate programs. Last year, you helped me raise over $1,300 online. This year, I am hoping you can once again support this online campaign.

This is a great opportunity for all of us to give back to our community the same way our respective communities have given to us.

Sound Business, Inc. (SBI) is an independent, 501(c)(3) New York City not-for-profit education services organization.  Its program, the College and Career Preparatory Institute (CCPI), based at West Harlem’s A. Philip Randolph Campus High School (Randolph High), is designed to enhance the public high school educational environment and culture. Through CCPI, SBI works with high potential youth from socio-economically disadvantaged communities.

Initiated at Randolph High in 1991, the mission of SBI is to foster systemic socio-economic change through grass roots education initiatives in public schools. The mission of CCPI is to prepare public high school students for admission into selective undergraduate programs at residential colleges; it is a comprehensive four-year program that addresses their academic, attitudinal and socio-cultural needs. A core component of CCPI is a performing arts program offered after school. The performing arts program aligns with Variety’s mission to support programs that use arts as a catalyst to transform the lives of under-served children.

A. Philip Randolph Campus High School is a public school founded in 1979 on the campus of the City College of New York (CCNY). CCPI enrollees are Randolph High students of color from socio-economically disadvantaged backgrounds.  Students travel to school from neighborhoods across the city. The student population at Randolph High is highly diverse—60% of students in the 2012-13 school year were Latino and 33% of students were African American.  Many of their families are recent immigrants. Annually, CCPI enrolls approximately 12-15% of Randolph’s 1,300 students.

SBI is a critical component of the current Principal’s vision for Randolph’s upward academic progress. The Principal, David Fanning, in partnership with SBI has initiated a turnaround at the school during the past 2.5 years. Mr. Fanning acknowledges the impact that SBI has on the school, which he has seen from the results SBI attains including statistics on acceptance rates at competitive colleges and the financial aid packages that SBI students secure.

SBI has three key goals:

1. To ensure all students enrolled in SBI’s College and Career Preparatory Program attend a competitive four-year college.

2. To support Randolph High in improving student achievement, graduation and college attendance rates.

3. To impact the achievement of additional New York City students by turning Randolph High into a laboratory school in which the strategies, innovation and facilities of Randolph are shared with neighboring schools.

To meet these goals, SBI and Randolph High work together seamlessly on three fronts:

1. Preparing students academically, socially and developmentally through college and career access programs integrated at the school site (including an arts program).

2. Creating a school-wide college preparatory culture.

3. Planning with the Department of Education and external partners to establish Randolph High as a laboratory school that shares strategies, innovation and facilities with neighboring schools.

CCPI prepares its graduates for admission into selective four-year residential colleges and assists them in securing the financial awards packages necessary for enrollment. It prepares students academically, attitudinally, and socio-culturally so they may achieve the level of college readiness required for admission to schools such as Hobart and William Smith (my alma mater), Skidmore, Vassar, Allegheny, LeMoyne, Trinity, Geneseo, and Wesleyan. SBI has been successful in recruiting a roster of volunteer and paid professionals, including teaching artists, who serve as instructors, chaperones, workshop facilitators, mentors, guest speakers and coaches. To achieve SBI’s goals, CCPI offers academic enrichment programs, an arts program, career path coaching and college preparation activities after school and during school lunch periods.

Although CCPI is not a performing arts training program, the arts are central to student development. The CCPI After School Performing Arts Program provides the students with the opportunity to create and perform dance, drama and music for the entire school community. It is in this program that students gain a new sense of community, sharing, trusting, caring, creating and open up to new ideas. It also solidifies their commitment to CCPI.

The program staff includes an Artistic Director, Program Manager, Academic Advisor, (each of whom also serves as a Teaching Artists), and 10 additional Teaching Artists. The budget for the arts training program is $95,250. Other funds supporting the program include annual Alumni & Friends fundraising campaigns, Board of Directors contributions, grants from other foundations, corporations, and government sources, fees, and benefit events.

With that said, I’d like for you to support this fundraising drive, as it is key to helping SBI remain a program that fosters the growth and development of hundreds of our kids. I know this first hand because I too benefited from SBI’s services as a high school student. SBI has been part of the village that helped raise me. Let’s make continue to make this a reality for someone else. Your donations makes this possible. Please, donate $1, $5, $10 or any amount at the link below. It’s as easy as 1, 2, 3.
