#FundFridayFocus for Black Youth!

Thanks for watching our video! Here are some of the participants in our weekly program Friday Focus.

The Black Foundation of Community Networks (BFCN) is a non-profit volunteer-run organization based in Vaughan, Ontario. Founded in 2011 by Cheryl Yarde and her family, BFCN aims to network individuals, organizations and resources in the Greater Toronto Area to better serve the Black community. Most of our initiatives centre around youth and education.

Friday Focus is our main initiative and the heart of BFCN. Once a week Black youth and adults join together at Woodbridge Public School for an evening of learning, exchange and fun. Youth spend time in a vibrant classroom with a teacher enhancing their math literacy and learning about Black history that is often left behind in their schools.  The youth end the evening in the gym with 30 minutes of physical activity and a snack. Meanwhile adults and parents enjoy some alone time in the Parent Forum where they engage in armchair discussions and participate in workshops from supporting organizations and individuals in the community over hot cups of tea (and cookies).

It is so important for our Black community to have a reliable and safe space where we can come together to build and learn from each other. In a short time BFCN has been able to reach over 100 youth in our community. We have also created a network of families who commit their time and support to our growing organization and the well-being of our diverse Black community.  We want to be able to successfully continue running Friday Focus because it is one of the few weekly programs in our community supporting both Black youth and parents. We have seen the results and refuse to stop now!

We are currently raising funds to hire a new secondary math teacher to meet the demands of our youth in Friday Focus. In addition, money will also go towards the costs of running the program including guest speakers, educational field trips, refreshments and materials. Any extra money raised will go towards our scholarship program http://bfcn.ca/Download.html!

Thank you to Ashley Iris Gill and Shawn Ramsay for filming and producing the video!
