Summit Mt Fuji

Donation protected
Help fund my journey to the top of Mt Fuji, Japan's highest mountain peak!

Back in 1996, this awkward little 11-year-old girl from a

small island in coastal British Columbia

learned something about Japan, and heard about what looked like

the most beautiful mountain

in the whole world.

Because she was already well-versed in hiking through the local forests and hillsides, she knew that she had a special inner drive. When she began to hike up a mountain, she had to get to the top - no matter what. No matter how tired she felt, or how little food she had prepared, she would forage for berries and keep on going.

With this compulsion to reach the summit, she just knew she had to get to the top of that most beautiful mountain. Because she had never left Canada before, Japan seemed so very, very far away. It was only a dream.....

Fast forward nearly two decades. That girl is me! Although I have made my way across the Pacific to teach English in Taipei, I still have not made it to Japan. However, I recently celebrated my 30th birthday, which made me think... if not now, when? So, I've booked a flight to Tokyo this summer, and I'm looking for YOUR help with making the rest of my trip a successful one! I plan to summit the mountain twice, first on the evening of August 20th to watch the sunset, and again in the wee hours of August 21st to take in the famous sunrise views known as goraiko.

I have carefully worked out my budget for my short time in Japan of 3 nights, 4 days. Although Japan is not known for its low-budget options, I have done my best to plan frugally while still allowing for surprises. My goal of $500 CDN will be adequate to cover accommodation (staying at hostels and a

mountain hut

!), transportation, and food. I also researched various crowdfunding platforms before selecting GoFundMe, to ensure your donations won't be wasted on high service fees.

Every person who contributes, even just $1, will receive a postcard sent from the highest peak in Japan! Yes, there is a

post office

at 3,776m above sea level. Just remember to send your mailing address to [email redacted](dot)ca. I will also document my hike on

Flickr

, and there may be a special surprise in store when I reach the summit (think: Skype from the mountaintop!).

Contributors of $20 or more will also receive a printed photograph of their choosing, from my Mt Fuji trip. Any other requests? Let me know!

Thank you so much for helping this dream of mine become a reality! Please feel free to live vicariously through me, and remember - it's never too late to start.
