Carmel-by-the-Sea's World War I Memorial is crumbling apart
We need your help to stop the decay and repair the damage

This coming Veterans Day,  November 11th marks the centennial of the end of World War 1. Ninety-seven years ago, the residents of Carmel-by-the-Sea built a memorial arch designed by Charles Sumner Greene to honor local veterans who served in that war. Today, the memorial arch stands as a reminder of those veterans and all the men and women who have served our country.

Time and weather have taken their toll on the memorial arch. Several of its sandstone blocks are cracking, some have crumbled apart.  Such an important symbol of remembrance should not be allowed to decay. We are a small group of citizens who have come together to repair the memorial. We call our group the Friends of the Memorial Arch.

After much time and effort, our group has located and secured the specific type of sandstone that was used in the original construction of the Memorial Arch in 1921 and 1922.  (This stone is not to be confused with the more commonplace Carmel stone.) We are also extremely fortunate to have the services of stone mason Brian McEldowney. Not only did Brian’s grandfather quarry the original stone for the memorial, but Brian and his father rebuilt the Memorial Arch in 1977 when it was badly damaged by a car accident.  At that time, they worked with Gordon “Did” Greene, the son of Charles Sumner Greene, to restore the arch. Brian’s unique experience and firsthand knowledge will insure that the memorial arch will be faithfully restored to the designer’s original intent.

Our group has determined that we need to raise at least $20,500 for the restoration of the Memorial Arch. We’re hoping to raise $10,000 of it through this Go Fund Me campaign. With your help, we can achieve our goal of restoring and rededicating the WW1 Memorial Arch in time for Veterans Day. Thank you for your consideration.
