UPDATED: We petitioned for and received partial funding for the trip from the university! But we would still like to have lodging expenses covered for each participant. We've adjusted our funding goal to reflect this. Every bit helps, thanks for sharing!
Bonjour ! My name is Sarah, and I am raising funds to accompany 5 students, including majors and minors in the French, English, Women’s Studies, Communication and Anthropology departments, to France in May of 2015 to explore Paris’ expansive literary history. Through a close and contemplative study of history, literature, language, and place, we will be able to further appreciate and understand some of the countless literary works of Paris and the authors who wrote them, as well as the complex political and social contexts surrounding them. Understanding also the often ignored roles women have played in literary history, we will be placing an intentional focus on women writers, publishers, and characters, and how their contribution has shaped society in France and beyond.
In designing our own literary tour as a group, we will be able to each experience something directly related to our interests and fields of study, as well as be exposed to new information, all with the support of fellow students. In addition to experiencing some of France's storied cafés and apartments that are the settings and sources of creativity for Parisian plots, and visiting a few of France’s spectacular museums, we plan to attend a play in a historical Paris playhouse, see a film, and attend a poetry slam.
Travel abroad experiences can often be out of reach for students for a number of reasons, and I aim to enable more students to have a French immersion experience, linguistically and culturally, who may not otherwise be able to. I hope to reduce the travel costs as much as possible for each student, and your donation will go directly to material costs for the spring trip.
