These days, owning a car is almost a necessity. Whether it’s getting to and from work, shuttling the kids to school, or driving to the grocery store, most of us rely on our cars every day. For struggling families, car troubles can be catastrophic, and access to a reliable vehicle can often mean the difference between getting back on their feet or falling deeper into poverty.
My name is David Lehmann and I am a Master Diagnostic Technician for Mercedes-Benz. I have been with Mercedes-Benz for 10 years, and I have been nationally recognized as one of the top technicians in the country. I have a passion for fixing cars and also a passion for helping people. I want to use the skills God has blessed me with to make a meaningful impact in the lives of others.
I'm sure you know someone who has had their car die on them, and you know the stress and strain it can create. As a mechanic, over the years I have seen many families’ hardships magnified by car troubles. This is an issue that has been on my heart for several years now and I feel like I've finally reached a point where I can make a difference.
My proposal is to start an auto repair shop that will partner with local charities and churches to provide reliable vehicles to families in need. I will seek out cars that don't run or are in disrepair, but still have tons of potential to be safe, reliable, fuel-efficient vehicles. I will then rehabilitate the cars and donate them to families in need - free and clear.
My goal for this fundraiser is to raise the start-up capital needed to acquire shop space and purchase the specialty tools, heavy equipment, and supplies needed to successfully run an auto repair shop. I have determined that I would need about $180,000 in start-up capital. The shop would run as both a business and a charity, with paid repair work supporting the process of finding and rehabilitating cars for donation. My goal is to rehabilitate and donate 12 cars in the first year, and to increase that number as the business grows. Repair work at no charge for struggling families will also be provided after the first year. To put this all in perspecitve - the cars I will be rehabilitating to donate will be cars normally valued at $7,000-$8,000 (after they are back in great shape). This means that after the first year of donations - YOUR contributions will have supported the donation of about $90,000 of cars!! After only 5 years (and more cars donated each year) - this will have soared to well over $450,000 in donated cars for families in need!! Isn't that awesome!?!? We just need an initial push to get it all rolling!
This is something I have been doing, on a much smaller scale, for several years. I have a lot of experience buying and repairing used cars. I also have experience working with an “auto ministry” at a church. Through this ministry, we performed repairs, at no charge, for people who couldn't have afforded the repairs otherwise - just to help those folks get back on their feet. For me, this auto ministry was not only an extremely rewarding experience but I also felt I was meeting a very urgent need in my community. In thinking about it now, I feel like every community has this need and I want to be the one who takes care of it in my community. Not only do I have the desire, but I also have the ability to achieve it.
I believe that my vision for an auto repair ministry will help meet a very real and direct need for families in our community - but I will need YOUR HELP to accomplish it. I'm calling on those people who have just read this and think it's a great idea and are willing to give their time and resources for a great cause. I'm looking for those people who have had a mechanic friend "take a quick look" at a car and have benefited from their knowledge and generosity. How about the people who, at some point in their past, owned a crappy car that was always breaking down, and would have considered it an immeasurable blessing if someone had given them a reliable vehicle? I'm looking for those people who see the need, see the benefit, and not only believe in my vision, but believe in me and that I can accomplish it. Please remember that EVERY donation helps get us closer to the goal. Even if you think the amount you want to help with is small - the impact that it makes is TREMENDOUS!!!
