WHAT'S THE SWEETS & SPICES STORY?
This is her-story like you've never seen it! Sweets & Spices is a staged production set in the gulf coast at the end of the Civil War. The multi-racial Spices (Cayenne, Thyme, Cinnamon, Verbena, Nutmeg and Saffron) are sex-slaves in the time of slavery, in Sweets' song-house brothel. Truly in the worst of circumstances. Through the days and nights spent with them, the audience shares their ambitions, talents, loves and terrors.
WHAT'S PROJECT'S STORY?
Last summer 6 actors met at the New LA Collective. With the coaching of master acting teacher Greg Braun, we worked over months, to develop the characters and their relationships. We then improvised scenes based on a skeletal script. The writer (Carmen) then took the footage and notes from the improv, and wrote the script.
WHAT'S THIS CAMPAIGN FUNDING?
We are putting up a staged reading to run through the piece to assess its strength; and to give possible producers and collaborators a chance to see the material. The funds raised here will pay for musical direction/collaboration/accompaniment, lighting/sound, renting the space & stipends for the actors and director (4 rehearsals and reading), refreshments, minimal set/costumes and your seat!
