Feed the Homeless & Pay It Forward

Tax deductible
Have you ever considered what it might be like to be hungry? To be homeless. To be sick or wounded.

Well I never did. Until recently.

My name is Bill Robinson and I'm an entrepreneur, journalist and writer. I've been writing for Fortune, Forbes, FT, WSJ and then The Huffington Post for the last seven years. Here is a link to my body of work on HuffPo.

For many years I was oblivious to the human suffering of others. The homeless, hungry and poor never entered my mind; they weren't part of my world. It wasn't that I was mean. Just clueless.

Recently, I became sick with a serious disease and over an extended period, became homeless.

I went to Asheville, NC for my treatments, a city where I had never been; knew no one and had nowhere to go after starting treatments.

Thank God for Haywood Street Congregation and Pastor Brian Combs.

They offered me two weeks of hospitality at their 9-bed Haywood Street Respite to heal and recuperate. And employing their many compassionate volunteers, saw to my needs beautifully. I don't know if I would have survived without them.

In addition to offering a safe place to stay and caring people helping the sick and wounded at their Respite, Haywood Street provides exceptional meals twice weekly in several rotations to over 500 people. These are not mere meals. They are generally catered by some of Asheville's top restaurants and chefs and come with linen covered tables, flowered centepieces, glowing candles and  an army of volunteers treating needy guests like they're attending dinner at a fine restuarant.

At Wednesday luch, Hungry guests are treated to free haircuts, acupuncture, a well-stocked clothing closet, and a wonderful "Story Circle" before sitting down to break bread.

For all who want to give something back or feel iike recognizing how much they have by helping others or want a life experience that you cannt get anywhere else, please give the Haywood Street. Give your time, your food, your second-hand clothes. Or, please give your money ... it will be gratefully accepted and honorably put to work.

See Pastor Brian Combs here for more of an idea about the vision and mission of Haywood Street Congegation.

And whether this piece compels you to give to Haywood Street or not, please give and give gernously to the poor, homeless, sick and hungy in your community.

There are so many people out there needing your help and you can do so much good by giving a little time or money to others. And by doing so, you'll be helping not only others but also helping yourself.

(Haywood Street Congregation is a 501 (c) 3 charity)
