Syphax Documentary-Development

I became fascinated with the little known story of the Syphax family in 2007.  At that time I produced and hosted a Black History television show which honored the legacy of Dr. Carter G. Woodson.  One of the guest on The Clio Exchange Show shared with me the story of an African American family who were descendants of former slaves belonging to George Washington.  After that opening, he then informed me that they were actually descendants from the family line of George Washington.  That was all I needed to begin a quest of learning as much as I could about this increadible relationship with the purpose of documenting the story on video.
The story will begin in 1791, at the homestead of George Washington at Mount Vernon.  The video will trace the business development and lifestyle of Washington and his descendants leading up to the establishment of Arlington House in 1801; and, into the establishment and eventual demise of Freedmen's Village.
The central characters in this dramatic view of colonial America, leading up to the Civil War, are the Syphax family patriach and matriach.  A beginning that started, in the case of Charles, with a union between an itenerant preacher from Alexandria and one of Washington's female slaves.  Whereas, Maria had a different beginning.  Family lore says that her birth was the result of a laison between George Washington Parke-Custis and one of Martha Dandridge-Washington's female slaves Airy Carter.
It will be a journey that will take viewers from the painful beginnings of enslavement to an unbelieveable ascension to seats of power, where Syphax descendants have managed to serve.
