Ever wonder what it’s like to go hungry? Or not know when or what your next meal would be? Or to eat the same thing every day because it was all you had?

In 2009 I was challenged to eat nothing but Beans and Rice for an entire month. The idea was; to donate the money I saved by not eating my normal diet AND to know what it was like to have next to nothing to eat. While, my first thought was “Hey, I can do this and lose weight!” little did I know (but learned soooo quickly) how bad it felt to be hungry, how it feels to have almost nothing to eat, what kind of toll it takes on your body to be malnourished and how boring it is to eat the same thing over and over.

The first time I did this in 2009, I only made it 19 days before I got sick. But rather than saying “never again” I took it as a challenge! Not only did I think it was an important reminder to myself, but I was able to save a lot of money by not eating fast food, snacks and just regular junk that sneaks into our cupboards!

With the help of friends, family and co-workers, I was able to challenge myself and eat nothing but beans and rice in 2011, 2012 and 2013. With the money donated from others and the money I saved, I have been able to collectively raise approx. $3100 during my last three challenges!!

Fast forward to now and I’m working on my 4th annual Beans and Rice challenge!!!! Yes!! My fourth challenge!! And this time I wanted to make it big! I wanted to expand beyond just friends, family and co-workers!

My goal this year is to raise money for two different organizations, the first being Impact Lives which reaches people in need globally and the second is The Open Door Mission who reaches people in need locally!

For the month of October 2014 I will be on a beans and rice diet. I will eat only beans and rice (along with a protein supplement) in support of Impact Lives. The money I save by not dining out or buying groceries will be donated…. But I don’t want to do this alone! I’m challenging you!

Here’s my challenge to you:

1.       Stop by my desk, email me, post to my facebook, or write me a letter just to cheer me on, ask questions or even taunt me with food (my favorite is bacon…mmmmm bacon).

2.       Try going a week, a day, or even one meal eating only beans and rice; you’ll be amazed what you learn about yourself!

3.       Please donate to help this very important cause! 

 Here are my disclaimers:

1.       I am not affiliated with either Impact Lives or the Open Door Mission, I just think they are wonderful Organizations that have done a lot to help communities near and far. The donations received will be split 50/50 and copies of the donation receipts will be posted online!

2.       In the past I have used any and every type of bean and rice and seasoned them so they weren’t SO boring. I promise not to eat jelly beans, boston baked beans or any other kind of bean that is really candy!!

3.       Since my body is not used to this, I will supplement with a protein shake to avoid getting ill.

4.       I apologize in advance to my husband and other close friends and family…beans beans the musical fruit….lol
