Wheelchair Accessible Van for Braxton

Donation protected
Braxton’s family needs a wheelchair accessible van.

Braxton is a strong boy in a broken body. He has an extremely rare gene mutation that did not let his brain form normally. Originally, doctors told his parents he would not live to 2 years old, but Braxton defied the odds and has shown the world what a loving family, supportive community, and persistent spirit can do. He is now 6 and attends the local school with other grade ones from his neighbourhood. Braxton cannot walk, or sit for long periods of time unassisted, and is dependent on his wheelchair. He is learning to communicate with words, but is clear with his smiles, grimices, sighs, and cries, to tell the world exactly what he is feeling. Braxton has a great sense of humour. He loves music and swimming.

Braxton’s mom and dad have been working so hard since Braxton was born to make sure he has the best quality of life. There have been so many hurdles to overcome, from surgeries and procedures, advocating for nursing care, therapies and appointments, fighting for equipment, and most recently a huge home renovation to make the main floor of their home wheelchair accessible. Frustratingly, the contractor hired to do the renovation took advantage of the Lockie family, and took funds that were invoiced for supplies and labour, and failed to complete the job, pay subcontractors, or produce much of the materials. After taking the contractor to court, and winning, they have yet to see the judgement enforced to get their money back. At this time Braxton’s Dad is working full time and Mom has had to return to work part time, as well as taking care of Braxton and his two younger siblings, to make ends meet.

Braxton and his family are in desperate need of a wheelchair accessible van. For a while they have been trying to get a van for Braxton to be transported to and from school, as well as to his many appointments and family outings, but have been unable to afford it. Currently mom must lift the 70+lbs wheelchair in and out of the back of a typical van everywhere Braxton goes. She lifts Braxton into a carseat in the van, which is quickly becoming difficult with him being a tall boy. They are needing to purchase a side entry wheelchair van, so that little brother and sister can ride safely in the back row, with Braxton riding in his wheelchair latched in the middle.

This family has been pushed to their limits, both mentally and physically, and a wheelchair van is no longer a luxury, but a necessity. Please help them.
