Help Nicky's Family During Cancer Treatment

On November 10th 2020 The Fiegert family’s world came crashing down. Nicholas, the youngest son of high school sweethearts, James and Lisa was booked in for some routine scans, after what was initially thought to be minor stomach problems. However scans picked up many abnormalities and they were abruptly ushered out of the radiology department, at their local country hospital and transferred immediately to The Womens and Childrens Hospital. We were all in shock, how could this be happening? Just yesterday Nicky was running, jumping and trying to keep up with his three older brothers.

After a week of invasive testing and sleepless nights Lisa and James were hit with their worst nightmare. Six weeks before his fourth birthday, Nicholas was diagnosed with a rare and aggressive cancer called Rhabdomyosarcoma. To make this time even harder, Covid 19 restrictions meant siblings could not even visit while in hospital.

Nicky immediately commenced IV chemotherapy, at times daily for weeks at a time. His treatment plan also included five intensive weeks of daily Radiotherapy in April, which left him extremely ill. Nicholas’ treatment is ongoing with at least another round of Radiotherapy and continued IV chemotherapy and then moving onto oral chemotherapy until at least next year.

The Fiegert family are now a family living with Cancer. The hours of travel for appointments, extended treatment, scans and testing, the rushed visits at 3am to the ED and constant worry has meant Lisa, has had to take extended leave from her employment as a Registered Nurse. James too has been unable to work during much of this time, trying to juggle life at home with Nicholas’ brothers, trying to keep life as normal as possible for them.

Now with new Covid 19 restrictions the family is facing further stress and financial hardship as James is employed interstate and can not risk going away to work. We are calling for support to help this lovely family ease the financial burdens of everyday life and hopefully take a well deserved family holiday once Nicholas is stronger.
