On Wednesday, June 19, after a few months of symptoms and at the urging of his primary care doctor, Mike had a diagnostic colonoscopy and ended up being diagnosed with Stage 3 colon cancer only 3 months after being laid off from his job. Mike had surgery to remove the tumor a month later on Thursday, July 18 at Froedtert Hospital in Milwaukee.
Unexpectedly, on the day after Mike's surgery while he was still recovering at the hospital, Erin's water broke. After an unplanned C-section, she delivered a baby boy, Roman David Ramczyk, one month early. Baby Roman was not breathing when he was born and had to be resuscitated.
Once stable, he was transferred to the NICU at the West Allis Women’s Pavilion where he received care for nearly 6 weeks before being transferred to Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin. Roman was subsequently diagnosed with a rare H-type Tracheoesophageal Fistula (TEF), a genetic defect that connects his esophagus and trachea causing him to aspirate. Roman had surgery (his condition is so rare that his doctors have only done this surgery a handful of times in the last 15+years) to repair the TEF, and is recovering at the Children’s hospital.
In addition to coping with the loss of Mike’s job, cancer and a new baby in the NICU, the Ramczyks have already incurred an overwhelming amount of medical and travel expenses. And these expenses are only just beginning, as Mike started his 6 months of chemotherapy through Froedtert at the end of August.
