Save a 16 Year-Old Girl's Life

Aviva is 16-year-old girl living in New Jersey with her loving parents and three siblings. Upon her mother’s severe postpartum depression eight years ago, their home began falling apart. Aviva’s father had to take on the role of both parents, and their family life became very strained. In this climate, three years ago, Aviva developed a serious case of anorexia.


Aviva is living on a mere 200 calories a day and on some occasions starves herself for days. Doctors have expressed that she can die within a matter of weeks if she continues this low caloric intake. Her heart beat has become irregular and she is in jeopardy of having heart failure. Her hair has begun cracking and falling out. She has developed osteoporosis and her bones are becoming brittle, causing her to lose ¾ inch in height. She is abusing laxatives and occasionally is unable to attend school because she is in tears from stomach pain. She is often on the verge of collapsing in pain due to her malnutrition. Despite her weak body, she exercises compulsively.


With the development of her eating disorder, Aviva’s self-esteem is deteriorated. She is barely involved socially and she feels embarrassed to interact with friends or strangers. She has had suicidal thoughts, but she wants to live, and eventually to live normally.


DESPITE HER FRAIL CONDITION, SHE VOLUNTEERS TO HELP OTHERS IN NEED
Aviva is incredibly spiritual and bright. She wants to right the wrongs of the world, and while she volunteers already, she wants to help the community even more once she recovers. Aviva would also like to help others to overcome this illness.
