Tiny Madeline Schramm Naeger
On March 8, at 10:20 in the morning, Madeline was born into the world at 23 weeks gestation. She weighed 1 lb 9 oz, and dropped to 1 lb 5 oz before she began regaining weight. She is the smallest person any of us have ever seen. Even with her legs kicked out, you could have hidden her completely in a first baseman’s mitt. Her chances of survival were put at 40%.
Maddy has made some progress, but will not be out of the woods for many weeks. She is still in the highest-risk pod in the Beaumont Hospital NICU, and will be for many more weeks. Some of the other babies in that pod have not been as fortunate as Maddy. She is still truly fighting for her life.
I am Madeline's grandfather, and I am trying to garner some help for her parents, Alyson and James. They are newlyweds who are struggling at modest wages while paying off student loan debt, and working long hours at our recently founded family business to get it off the ground. When it became apparent that Alyson’s pregnancy and Madeline were at risk, Alyson was hospitalized for several days before she delivered. This fundraiser is to help them cover the deductibles and other un-covered medical expenses. She had just switched from one high deductible insurance plan to a different high deductible insurance plan for James and her, and they now have both of those deductibles to cover. Their life is full of stress and daily hospital visits. They also need to outfit a home nursery that can handle their preemie. Any funds that we raise that are not needed for medical expenses will be donated to the Royal Oak Beaumont Hospital NICU, which is doing a spectacular job with Madeline's care.
