Mr C Moves Out West

Hi all.
Peter Carioscia – Mr. C – retired from Buckley Country Day School last week. He’s been teaching there for 32 years. This summer, he, his wife Bettianne and his son Bryce are moving to Bozeman, Montana to join Travis in the red rock of the great American West. In short, they’re finally doing it.
A few of us have got together and set up this GoFundMe campaign to help him on his way.
I’ve known Peter since 5th Grade, when I was such a book-obsessed, proper, little old man that he felt compelled to tackle me during recess, steal my blazer and run off with it. He cackled as he ran.
If you’re a former student, you will have stories like this. Mr C threw erasers. He made sardonic jokes. He set required reading like The Giver and Where the Red Fern Grows. If you’re older than me, he might have coached you. Peter took students on trips to Massachusetts in the fall and set them hiking up in the big woods; some lucky ones took summer trips with his company out to Utah, Montana and Wyoming. He introduced us to campfire tales and doing our own dishes and packing our own gear. He made us obsess over Egypt and ancient Rome. He made us rehearse, and rehearse, and rehearse. If you were overconfident, he knocked you down a peg, and smiled as he did it; if you were young, and shy, he gave you a boost. He called you, and the world at large, out on their bull.
He’s one of those rare things, a once-in-a-lifetime teacher.
Now, Peter wants to spend the rest of his career working in outreach and education out west. We're asking his former students and his friends to help, however much they can, to offset the expenses of relocating his family and setting up shop. After three decades on a teacher’s salary it’s no easy thing to up sticks and move to Montana, and what he’s decided to do is brave as hell. Hopefully we can all give a little bit to help.
Now, for those of you that still get off on the big outdoors, or who give a damn about history, or know what it’s like to thrill to the feel of a stage – or who, like me, owe Mr C forever for opening your eyes a little wider to the world – this is a way to give back.
The bar is set at $10,000, which will cover relocation and go a small way towards covering initial expenses. It would be beyond terrific if we end up going more, but please donate whatever you can.
Regardless, it takes an extraordinary man to give so much for so long, and it takes a courageous son of a gun to set off into the West with the aim of doing more good out in the dramatic country that he loves.
