As some of you may know I started my own company Matthew James Heart and Home by Jamie Ruiz in efforts to fundraise for a scholarship in my brother's memory.
Five years ago, I lost my brother to heroin addiction. And over the years, I have lost too many friends. It's time to erase the stigma associated with addiction. The more we talk about this issue, the easier it is for those struggling to ask for help.
I'm starting this scholarship to create an open and honest dialogue about heroin addiction on Long Island. The proceeds of the scholarship will go to a deserving high school senior who has faced adversity.
To date, we have raised nearly $2,000 in scholarship money to be awarded to seniors at Island Trees High School in Levittown, New York.
