Jill’s marathon walk for RPDs in memory of Murphy

On the 21st April, our very own Jill Byrne is power walking a full marathon in Worcester to raise money in memory of her beloved Murphy, for the West Mercia Retired Police Dogs Welfare Fund. Every penny raised will go to the Fund to provide financial support for the veterinary needs and ongoing care of our Retired Police Dogs (RPDs). This includes vet bills, alongside other forms of welfare such as Murphy's wheels, hydrotherapy and laser therapy.

Below are Jill’s words…

During the 20 or so years I have been attached to West Mercia Police’s Dog Section, I have taken on 3 RPDs, all being German Shepherds. My last was Murphy, who sadly passed in January this year at nearly 14.5 years of age.

Since the WMP RPD Welfare Fund was set up, I have been in receipt of some donations towards Murphy’s vet bills, including some wheels so Murphy was able to get out and be independent on his walks and runs in his senior years. In November, Murphy enjoyed his few days away in Devon at a few beaches on his wheels.

The fund supports every West Mercia

RPD that is registered. It has committee members and volunteers. We have to continue ways of raising funds so we can support our retirees. They deserve the very best in their retirement, sometimes at a younger age due to injury. I could go on and on about this, just because of my ‘love for dogs’.

So I training for the ‘London Marathon Myway’. I have been doing it for some months in all weathers and I am now up to 22 miles.

On the 21st April, I will take part in this power walking marathon around rivers, streets and canals in Worcester in memory of my RPD Murphy.

If you can donate any amount for this well deserving cause, will be hugely appreciated. Every penny raise will go to the Fund; don’t forget, once a PD retires, it is no longer looked after by the police and they cannot be insured, so all vet bills are funded by the new owner.
