Help save the Old Lewiston Congregational Church

Donation protected
The First Congregational Church in Lewiston was the first Protestant Church in Trinity County. It was organized on October 20, 1889. At this time, the population of Lewiston was 200. The residents living within a six-mile radius swelled this number to 350. This old church is situated on a knoll overlooking the old section of Lewiston and the Trinity River. Across the street is the old Pioneer Cemetery surrounded by a picket fence.

The beauty of the church inspired the town to repair and improve its 1862 schoolhouse, giving the town an impressive set of public buildings. The church building eventually fell into disuse, and it was purchased by Mr. and Mrs. Carl Steffans and presented to the Lewiston Community Services District for preservation as a historic building.

The Lewiston Community Services District doesn't have funds available for any repairs to the church, but we are launching a grassroots effort to save this historical building. We're looking to raise money to repair the front porch, soffits on the steeple and repaint. We have received bids from a local contractor for these repairs, and he's graciously donated his labor for the painting portion.

Please consider donating to this wonderful cause and help restore this beautiful historical gem in our community.
