Keep Ra'chel at Cambridge

I am on a journey to help make a positive change within the world, even if it is only one person at a time; and while it may sound like an impossible goal, someone has to take the first steps to ensure lasting change for the generations to come. My future aspiration is to become a Human Rights solicitor-advocate and eventually an International Human Rights lawyer, intending to help the most marginalised and oppressed people within our societies.

To do so, I know that I must pass through various stages of education to attain the qualifications and experience needed to make a positive change. Having recently achieved First Class Honours in my International Legal Studies with a year abroad (LL.B) from the University of Kent, I am excited to continue my journey to the next stage. Due to my hard work and dedication, I have been accepted to read a Master of Laws (LLM) at the University of Cambridge this October 2020. I have met the academic conditions required by the University, however, the last hurdle preventing me from taking up this place is the University’s deadline of July 31st to raise the £27,525 needed to cover my tuition and living expenses for the year. Although it may seem like a large amount to raise in a short time, I am completely determined and confident that I will be able to attend Cambridge this Autumn.

Therefore, I humbly ask that you accompany me on this journey and help to make this next stage possible. Any donation is welcomed, no matter how small; and every share is equally welcomed.

This passion to understand and help the less fortunate has always been a keen interest of mine, as I believe that change must start within our community and grow outwards. This led me to be a part of the Young Leaders Programme, managed by the Active Change Foundation, where I did research and presentations on tackling the issue of hate crime within the U.K. I then took a gap year before university, where I travelled to South America with the International Citizens Service to provide aid, education and resources to impoverished communities; followed by travelling to Jamaica to volunteer at a children's home catering for special needs children. Once I started my law degree at the University of Kent, I found my passion for human rights flourishing even more, within the specialised modules I chose to study. Furthermore, my interest in international legal matters led me to add a year abroad to my degree, allowing me to study Chinese and American Law at Renmin University in Beijing, China.

All of these experiences have allowed me to see the world from various points of view, which I believe will greatly benefit me in my future endeavours. I also believe that an offer from Cambridge is exceptional considering the statistics that out of 1,571 Black or Black British African and Caribbean applicants in 2018/2019, only 197 were made an offer, and only 93 of those were able to take up their place at Cambridge (https://www.graduate.study.cam.ac.uk/sites/www.2020.graduate.study.cam.ac.uk/files/graduate_admissions_report_2018-19_v4_0.pdf).

Thank you for taking the time out to read about my journey, I hope you will be able to be a part of it.
