Our Brother Dean Hale has been battling cancer for over eight years. He's been the ultimate warrior and inspiration for us all. This is his story, in his words:
I was first diagnosed with non-Hodgkins lymphoma in 2008, following an annual physical. Soon after, a test revealed it to be stage 4, non small cell lung cancer. Treatment began immediately, and continued with chemotherapy every week at the Angeles Clinic in Santa Monica. The chemo treatments typically lasted 5 - 6 hours and then we had to fight the traffic home to Murrieta. After months of treatment, followed by a PET scan, I was cancer free......So I thought. Nine months later, the follow-up appointment showed the cancer had returned in my neck and brain; multiple tumors. We then started treatment again, lasting over 6 months, and luckily got through it without any deficits. In January 2018, I sustained an injury due to an episode of poor balance, only to find out I was now suffering from edema in my brain due to all the radiation, and cancer had appeared on my spine. Treatment switched to IV chemo for 9 more months, with many, many bad side effects. When the IV chemo treatments concluded, there was no change to the cancer, and I now had to move on to proton therapy with the California Proton Clinic. As that treatment concluded this year, tumors are getting smaller. Now it is about recovery, strength, and balance. I'm currently on light duty.
Through it all Dean has always gone above and beyond for his family, his brother Firefighters and the community that he serves. It’s our time to take care of Dean.
